Sources, sinks, and cycling of dissolved organic copper binding ligands in the ocean

چکیده
Abstract Organic Cu-binding ligands have a fundamental influence on Cu distributions in the global ocean and they complex >99% of dissolved seawater. however, represent large diversity compounds with distinct sources, sinks chemical properties. This heterogeneity makes organic ligand pool difficult to study at scale. In this review, we provide an overview that compose marine Cu-ligand pool, their dominant sources sinks. We also summarize most common analytical methods measure water column samples. Generally, are classified according conditional binding strength Cu. However, lack definition for categories has previously complicated data intercomparison. To address this, general classification discuss emerging patterns classification. date, there is no biogeochemical model explicitly represents ligands. estimates fluxes key interfaces as first order step future modeling efforts focused

Localized refractory dissolved organic carbon sinks in the deep ocean
[1] The global ocean holds one of Earth’s major carbon reservoirs as dissolved organic matter (662 ± 32 PgC). Most of this material (>95%) is termed refractory dissolved organic carbon (RDOC) as Williams and Druffel (1987) found it to be old relative to the circulation time of the ocean. While RDOC within the modern ocean is thus perceived as vast and only slowly renewed, its mobilization has b...
متن کاملSources and sinks of dissolved phytochelatin in natural seawater
We modeled dissolved phytochelatin concentrations by studying its exudation from phytoplankton and its removal from seawater. Exudation rates were obtained from experiments in which a marine diatom, Thalassiosira pseudonana, was grown in Cd-containing medium. Dissolved phytochelatin in the culture medium was measured as a function of time, and a first-order model was fit to the data to derive e...
متن کاملMethyl bromide: ocean sources, ocean sinks, and climate sensitivity.
The oceans play an important role in the geochemical cycle of methyl bromide (CH3Br), the major carrier of O3-destroying bromine to the stratosphere. The quantity of CH3Br produced annually in seawater is comparable to the amount entering the atmosphere each year from natural and anthropogenic sources. The production mechanism is unknown but may be biological. Most of this CH3Br is consumed in ...
متن کاملFe-Binding Dissolved Organic Ligands in the Oxic and Suboxic Waters of the Black Sea
In the oxygen-rich layer of the Black Sea, above the permanent halocline, the Fe and nitrate concentrations are low where fluorescence is relatively high, indicating uptake by phytoplankton. In this study we used ligand exchange adsorptive cathodic stripping voltammetry (CLE-aCSV), using 2-(2-Thiazolylazo)-p-cresol (TAC) as measuring ligand, to investigate the role of Fe-binding dissolved organ...
